President's Message
A message from one of Johns Elves on behalf of President John Peck

Last Tuesday (19 March 2024) meeting saw:
  • A group of four Rotarians from Rowville Rotary Club (that took part in the D9810 Ride for Medical Research and 2 students from Dandenong High School that we sponsored to the Youth Science Forum to tell us about that experience (see below).
  • An update on the car show with around 3,500 people and over 200 cars. The lack of foot traffic was put down the the high heat on the day (certainly got more than the Moomba Festival that was cancelled due to the heat)  meaning revenue well down. Expecting a full report next meeting by John Ternel
  • Brian attended having returned from Bhutan and provided a report (see below) and it was especially good to hear of the opportunities provided during the trip by the network of Rotary and will see how they develop.
  • Calls for additional support for the Harmony day BBQ at Chisholm TAFE (again story below) and the exchange of rotary information on what each club was working on was clearly appreciated by all and especially the students.
  • Leanne provided some insight into the President Elect weekend.
Coming up soon (27 April) will be the Holland Festival so keep that date free and will be looking for volunteers to assist.
Monday 25 March 2024 is the joint meeting with Berwick for the presentation with Interplast. Tue 26 meeting had therefore been cancelled.

Kind regards,

Terry

Our guest speakers were Keely (on the left) and Andy (on the right of our president John Peck in the above photo) from Dandenong High School.

The Rotary Club of Greater Dandenong and Endeavour Hills sponsored Keely and Andy to the National Youth Science Forum at the Australian National University. Around 500 year 12 students attended the Forum and both outlined their particular interests in science and where they hoped to go from here.

Brian has returned from his trip to Bhutan and provided an update from the previous gateway post of 3rd March 2024 from when his trip had just begun.

Brians trip was to review of a representative sample of the 130 SkyHydrant Installations carried out over the past 5 years.

Due to the travel difficulties in such a mountainous country a typical day consisted of about 5-6 hours in a vehicle to see 3-4 installations.

During the trip he was able to visit 19 sites of existing SkyHydrants and participate in the installations of an additional 2 units.

The above photo is from Tashitang School, site of one of the installations.

One of the existing sites visited was Tendruk Higher Secondary School sponsored by the Rotary Club of Greater Dandenong in 2019. This is a very remote school over 9 hours travel on some very rough road, from Thimphu, the Capital of Bhutan (photos in 3rd March Gateway). Brian was welcomed at the school by a line of at least 20 people wanting to shake his hand and informed that is was extremely rare to have a non Bhutanese visitor, or even a visitor from the Thimphu head office!
A big thank you to Lynn, Ken, Hans and Howard for the Chisholm Harmony Day BBQ at Chisholm TAFE on Thursday 21 March and the promotion of Rotary.
