Dear Fellow Rotarians,

Hello from beautiful Khao Lak, Thailand.

Wow, what a night we had on Thursday at the 'Calcutta Auction'.

It was wonderful to see so many friends & family joining us, along with the Rotary Club of Berwick, who had 2 tables and the Rotary Club of Casey with a table, their attendance and support was greatly appreciated.
It was lovely to see our Honorary Member, Graeme Coates in attendance and to welcome back David & Jean Langworthy from their overseas travels.

This is what Rotary is all about!  Rotarians gathering together with friends and family to have a great time, enjoy fellowship and raise funds for great causes; this one was for Rotary Foundation.

I'd like to acknowledge the amazing work of Martin and Wilma Pater,  John Heathcote, Brian Ashworth and Peter Faulkner for putting together this very successful event.

Hopefully you will all have seen my email regarding the 'Calcutta' event which was sent on Friday night.  If you haven't read it already,  please do so as soon as possible.

I truly hope that we continue to have events like this where we all get together, have fun and 'make a difference'.  If any of you have ideas for future events, Martin and myself will certainly welcome all suggestions.

Our next big event is on Tuesday October 25th with our Hydrogen Guest Speaker - Joe Kremzer, who will be joining us along with Principal of Dandenong West Primary School Bev Hansen and the DWPS Community Hub co-leader Abby Rezek.

Please support the event by coming along, inviting your friends and family to join us in helping to make this important meeting well worthwhile.  Colin and myself do apologise for not being able to attend due to our holiday in Thailand which had been postponed for a couple of years due to COVID, followed by a visit to Canberra.

I would absolutely love it if we could get a large group of our members together to attend Casey's Wheelchairs for Kid's night on Monday October 31st.  This is an amazing project which deserves our support, please book via the details on the Flyer for this event.

Our Literacy Buddies program with Ardoch and St. Mary's Primary School is going along really well.  Last Thursday we had 'Big Buddies', Ben Keller, Colin Byron and  Ken & Lynn Tam visit the school, meet their 'Little Buddies' and enjoy some activities and afternoon tea.

Our 'Little Buddies' are very studious and ambitious, with plans already in place for their future, such as getting into really good secondary schools and then moving on to University.

A great time was had by all in attendance. These positive connections are helping to expose Rotary to the greater Community and to young people, who will perhaps consider joining Interact, Rotaract or Rotary one day.  They were all very keen to find out what Rotary is all about.

I'm disappointed that I was unable to attend on Thursday as I had important and enjoyable Nanny duties, taking care of my grandchildren on that day.
I'm really looking forward to being at the next session at the end of the school year.
I am extremely proud that our club is growing and there is a great deal of enthusiasm and positive feedback regarding our meetings. It's exciting that we have another two prospective members in the wings, who I'd love to induct sometime in November.

Last Friday, Colin, Howard, Doug (from Men's Shed) and Val went along to James Cook Primary School to assess the works to be done at the school as advised by Anne Burgess.  Howard took photo's and will be working with the Men's Shed to prioritise the works.  We hope to have Rotarians working alongside the Men's Shed volunteers on this much needed project.

Colin & John met with Babar on Saturday over a coffee.  Babar is heading back to Pakistan to spend time with his Mum and bring her back home with him for a visit.
Babar will be meeting with the club in which he was a member to discuss project opportunities; he will present to our club upon his return.

There WILL NOT be a meeting this Tuesday October 18th, so enjoy the week off.

I look forward to seeing you all when we return from Canberra, where Colin begins his DGN training and we will be attending the Zone 8 Conference.  It will certainly be a shock to the system when we arrive in Canberra after the very warm weather her in Thailand.

Regards to all,

Leanne

Final Playground Removal 2021/2022

Playground removal

The final playground harvest for the Rotary year was completed on a drizzly 27th June morning in Noble Park. Under the control of 'Friend of Rotary' Mel, Hans, Con and Andrew De Z, with “special comments” and tips from District RORP Supremo, Wayne, of Mt Martha, the work was completed in 3.5 hours.
This was a sizeable and sophisticated playground and, after refurbishment, will be shipped to Cape Town in South Africa and re-erected in a poor area. The local children will be absolutely overjoyed. The benefits should last a long time.

Cornerstone Contact Centre Gazette
June 2022

Hi friends,

At Cornerstone Contact Centre, we have just reached the remarkable milestone of 30 years helping homeless and marginalised in Greater Dandenong. The number of lives that have been improved through the care and support of our team and broader community over these thirty years is just phenomenal. I'm sure you will agree that it is an amazing opportunity to celebrate the many individuals, families, organisations, local businesses, and agencies, not to mention staff, volunteers and board members (current and previous) who have each contributed towards the wonderful work of Cornerstone.

Earlier this week I was chatting with a community member who has been coming along to Cornerstone for over 15 years. With a big smile, he shared "the Cornerstone team are like my family." He feels loved and cared for here, and he is always keen to get involved wherever he can.

In August, we will be celebrating this milestone with a Gala Night fundraising dinner. This will be a great time to celebrate the work of Cornerstone, and to thank all who have been involved over the years. We would love for you to attend. All of the details can be found below, along with a booking link for tickets. Why not put together a table with friends and family, and join us to celebrate! All funds raised on the night will contribute to the ongoing work of this special organisation.

With my thanks for the support and care that you continue to show to the homeless and marginalised from our community.
