Dear Fellow Rotarians,

I'm really pleased that Tuesday night's meeting went so well with 25 in attendance. We collected $125 for Australian Rotary Health from our 'Hat' contributions.

Despite a last minute change of room at the Dandenong Club it was a very successful night with lots of positive feedback.  Many thanks to Val Bennett for organising our Guest Speaker Anne Burgess, Principal of James Cook Primary School; we are looking forward to becoming involved with the school.
Thank you to Margaret McDonald, Inger De Zylva and Janet Hinson for attending and welcome back Ken & Lynn Tam.  Janet is very keen to become involved in our Community projects (she is coming along to St. James tomorrow to observe the meals program) and I will be asking her if she'd like to join our Club.

Our Bunnings Sausage Sizzle on Saturday was fantastic, thank you to all Rotarians who were rostered on and worked very hard.  It's always great to work together and raise funds for the Community, it's very pleasing that we were able to raise $1200

Our new members Lilani De Alwis and Babar Jamil enjoyed their shifts and it was lovely to have Ian Maxwell and Ghaith & Abraham Khalil helping out too.
Phillip Thurgood did a great job, as always, putting the roster together and John Peck, we appreciate the pack up, clean up and storage of all the equipment.

We have a great club with fantastic members who are always willing to help out and 'make a difference' to the lives of others, whilst working and enjoying fellowship.

This brings me to the reason I would really like to 'get together' on a more regular basis.  Our formal Rotary Meetings are held on the 1st and 3rd Tuesdays of each month, however I believe we have more chance of increasing membership and retaining members if we have more options.

We have been seeing more people attending over the past few months than we have in quite some time.
COVID certainly made things difficult for everyone, we became somewhat disconnected and met on ZOOM; we are finally getting back to some normality.

We are all extremely busy and it's not alway possible to attend on the designated 'Rotary' meeting nights.
I'd like to trial more regular Rotary nights over the next couple of months, which will include informal or social meetings and project meetings. This would provide more flexibility and help to keep us all connected.

The informal meeting we had a couple of weeks ago provided us with the opportunity to see some of our members who hadn't been able to attend for some  time and also gave people a chance to offer suggestions and feedback in a more relaxed environment.

If this trial is successful, I will survey all members and if the response is positive, it will be taken to the Board to propose a change to our 'By-laws'.

I will be away for a couple of weeks from next Sunday for a 7 day holiday in Khao Lak, Thailand and then I'll be attending the Zone 8 Conference in Canberra, where Colin will begin his District Governor Nominee training.

I have asked Vice President Martin Pater to take my place during this time.

I hope to see many of you at the 'Caulfield Cup Calcutta' on Thursday night, 13th October.

Kind Regards,

Leanne

June 7th Meeting Report
In last week's Club bulletin, we did not have an update on our meeting held on June 7th. Editor Con has provided the following summary:

Meeting 7 June 2022
As reported by Pres Peter on Club Runner, the live-cross to the school at Ella, in
Sri Lanka, stuttered and eventually died due to technical limitations of
insufficient bandwidth to carry video images. After a late start, as they grappled
with their limitations, we caught only static glimpses of the school, some
teachers and pupils and missed out on seeing the well. This was particularly
disappointing because our Friend of Rotary, Mel Bell, and your Editor had put a
lot of work into bringing this about. The school children were also disappointed
because they had prepared a concert item for us, and they were all gathered in
their assembly hall in expectation. We have asked them to prepare a video of
the intended program and send it to us. Hopefully, we will be able to view it at
a later date.

(Sharp eyes might be able to spot PP Susan Collier second from the right. It was great to see her back after a long absence. Susan was President of the Dandenong Rotary Club and involved in the decision to merge.)

Nevertheless, this was a great achievement all round, as the school now has drinking quality water all year. The total cost of around $3,600, half funded by a District Grant, was an illustration of how much of a lasting difference Clubs and Districts can make in the World, without having to resort to the “mega-projects” insisted on by some at RI.

Mel gave a brief update on the happenings with the RORP playground removal and recycling projects completed recently and upcoming.
Con spoke of a Project Approval Application lodged with the Board for urgent repairs needed to the Brand New Day building. In anticipation, Neil had measured up, ordered and taken delivery of the timber required, using his contacts to obtain supply, despite the well-publicised shortages. He is organising two carpenters for a day to, at least, replace the rotting pergola.  The Board will consider if the Members can be corralled into doing the interior painting.
The usual fines took place, along with a “two up” raffle, to supplement the ticketed raffle. In all, some $140 was raised on the night.

ESRAG AGM

ESRAG Annual General Meeting

A reminder that the ESRAG Annual General Meeting will take place on 23 June 2022, commencing at 12 pm UTC (Greenwich Mean Time).
Our keynote speaker for the night will be Dr. Mark Eakin, who created and led Coral Reef Watch during his 28-year career with NOAA, the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.  Combining satellite temperature data and climate modelling, the system has accurately predicted every major mass bleaching event since 1997, giving reef managers early warning enhancing their ability to conserve reefs and the ecosystems they sustain, including fisheries. Dr Eakin served as chief science advisor for the documentary "Chasing Coral," which won the audience award for Best U.S. Documentary at the 2017 Sundance Film Festival and the 2018 Emmy for Best Nature Documentary.
ESRAG Directors will share highlights of the 2021-22 program year. We will also welcome the newly-elected Directors and thank and say farewell to those who are completing their service on the Board. Register here. Upon registration, you will receive a Zoom link for the event.
